Recs if you like Hench...

Corporate satire and other fiction set in the office/workplace, because apparently your 9-5 just isn’t enough!

'It seemed to me that anything unpredictable was named dangerous by Gods and men alike. But the word UNPREDICTABLE seemed reserved for women alone. A woman they cannot control, whether Goddess or mortal, is a dangerous woman' Hekate by Nikita Gill. A list of "dangerous" women. Please recommend any dangerous women I missed!

Even fantasy lands are full of bureaucracy

Books about people (particularly women) with a unique job situation. The definition of "unique job situation" is basically vibes. It could be fantastical or surreal, or just a normal job in an unusual situation. Or maybe a job so mundane and specific that the focus on it feels weird. Also books about real people with unique and interesting jobs. (Also I have not read all of these so I'm just going off descriptions for some of them.)

July is Disability Pride Month! Here's a big pile of books with disabled characters. All the books also have at least one queer character, and in most cases, the queer character and the disabled character are one and the same. (There are a few non-fiction titles in the mix as well; representation for queerness may be subtext/interpreted). (This list is presented by Duck Prints Press, the indie publisher focused on publishing queer art and stories by queer creators! A group of us collaborate to make these recommendations.)

Do you feel like you've read everything there is to read? Or get annoyed that the same books are on all the rec lists? Well, here are some more obscure masterpieces!

Some of the covers are terrible - especially among the older or self-pubbed books; there's a few YA in here; and some that are science fantasy rather than 'pure' sci fi. But trust me: they're all EXCELLENT. (And if you already love a bunch of these, let's be friends!)

superhero & supervillain stories!

(trying to highlight those outside of marvel, dc, and the other major franchises)

"When fortune smiles on something as violent and ugly as revenge, it seems proof like no other that, not only does God exist, you're doing His will."

Books where violence, anger, and revenge are central themes.

So often scientist characters in fiction are hard to find, portrayed in a way that’s scientifically inaccurate, or prone to stereotypes.

Think evil mad scientists, characters with zero social awareness, or people who don’t have interests or hobbies outside of being obsessed with their work.

This list is for books with characters who feel like real people, and just happen to be scientists. Huge nerds with equally huge personalities.

(Will accept fantasy characters who are scientist coded)

Since comics can be a bit overwhelming to break into, I present a collection of (mostly) graphic novels to satisfy your superhero kick.

Mostly Marvel & DC properties, but open to other superhero (or villains) as well

Femme fatales, lady thieves, and other feminine criminals of both the real and fictional variety.

sff that starts out somewhat normal... until it isn't. for when you want to look around on page 300 and wonder "how the hell did we get here??"

Fifty more books from the second ten years of Canada Reads, an annual "Battle of the Books" run by the CBC (Canada's national broadcaster). Each year five Canadian celebrities step in to champion one Canadian book in a series of televised debates/discussions to see which book will come out on top.

Today is Superhero Day, so we made a list of books we love starring queer superheroes (with the understanding that sometimes the line between superhero and supervillain is razor thin...and that magical girls are a flavor of superhero...). (This list is presented by Duck Prints Press, the indie publisher focused on publishing queer art and stories by queer creators! A group of us collaborate to make these recommendations.)

Romances with slutty little academics and their even sluttier little glasses. It’s always the quiet ones

Reading is political ✌️

List of novels as in text novels about superheroes. Most of these are queer and indie. I haven't read all of these so if anything seems misplaced, feel free to comment

When the point of view character is a sidekick to someone else.
