Hendrix Bateman is one of The Lucky Three, a trio of players who were not on the Titan’s team plane the night it crashed. Feeling as if he’s been given a second chance, Hendrix is determined to make the most out of his life, but that doesn’t mean he’s not suffering from scars that can’t be seen. When I lost my Titan brothers in the crash, it was a mixed bag of emotions. I was devastated and grief stricken, but I was also grateful to be alive. Yeah, that might cause a little—okay, a lot of—guilt, but now I’m determined to live each day as if it’s my last. A night out with friends puts me in the crosshairs of Stevie Kisner—the devastatingly beautiful bar owner with a sharp tongue and a fire in her eyes that lets me know she has zero tolerance for guys like me. I’ve never been one to back away from a challenge, so I’m not dissuaded by Stevie’s tough as nails attitude or her big biker dad who looks like he wants to kill me. Fueled by too many shots and the raucous urging of my teammates, I set out to show Stevie I’ve got game both on and off the ice. While I shouldn’t be looking for anything more than a good time, I can’t help but be captivated by Stevie. She’s cool as hell and we burn hot together. But the more I get to know her, the more I can tell she’s holding something in reserve, and let’s just say I’ve got some trust issues after my last disastrous attempt at a relationship. Now I need to decide if I’m going to let my past dictate my future or if I am willing to put my heart on the line to find out if Stevie is exactly what I think she is—my everything.

Once again, Sawyer Bennett sucked me into the world of the Pittsburgh Titans. Hendrix is one of the three players who were not on the plane when an entire hockey team and staff were killed in a crash. While he has had some issues to deal with being a survivor, they manifest in a different way than they did for Coen. Hence, him keeping a girlfriend for far too long even when it’s clear to everyone that she is not a nice person or the right one for him. So although he breaks up with her the same day he meets the FMC, it’s not a rebound story. His relationship had been over for months.
There is something that happens in the very first chapter in the first few pages that almost put me off from Stevie. Being very familiar with this author I stuck to it and still cannot understand why it was in this story. Stevie has a very misogynistic view of one of her dad’s employees. It’s internal but icky. The person does not seem like a good person, but it has nothing to do with how she dresses and, after getting to know Stevie, is not something I could see her even thinking. I’m saying this because if this is you’re new to this author you may not read further. Again, Stevie ends up being a fantastic character and I’m not even sure why this one paragraph is in this book as it doesn’t fit.
Anyway, Hendrix and Stevie are perfect together. They don’t seem as though they would on paper, Stevie doesn’t watch sports and grew up with a single dad, being all but abandoned by her mom. Hendrix had a wonderful childhood with two very supportive parents and an aunt who adores him. Of course, this is all surface stuff. There were hardships in Hendrix’s life and Stevie’s dad is amazing and loving.
Both Hendrix and Stevie make pretty big missteps in this relationship. And although Stevie’s moral compass pulls her through in the end, hiding things from Hendrix leaves him and his teammates open to scandal. Hendrix reacts before thinking and they both end up hurt pretty badly. This is a romance so of course they eventually make up and get their HEA, which they both truly deserve.
There is only one original teammate who wasn’t on the plane whose story hasn’t been told. I believe he’s next. I feel like we haven’t learned as much about him throughout this series so far, but another character introduced in this story has me quite intrigued by the direction his story will go.
