Women who are just a bit different. Some may call them insane, but the real insanity is what happened to them. This list centered on speculative fiction and more specifically horror, so please bear that in mind. Horror has a unique ability to express female rage, shame, and lack of control. Not every book on this list deals with these themes, but all of them have misunderstood women or girls in them, people who think differently, and/or are treated differently because of it.

For nonfiction readers with ✨ specific ✨ interests 🤓

This is a list of horror books written by women, as recommended by Sadie Hartmann (Mother Horror) in her book Feral and Hysterical. I highly recommend that you pick up a copy of Feral and Hysterical because it is so much more than a list of books. There are more lists of books, but also thoughtful essays by women writers. It's worth spending some time with Feral and Hysterical.
