Rebecca Zanetti

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

The plural form of Nemesis is Nemeses Anna Albertini never thought she’d have to look up the plural form of nemesis. In fact, she never thought she’d have one, much less three. But as she and her new partner try to make a go of their fledgling law firm, enemies come from every direction. First, there’s a newspaper reporter trying to make a name for herself by dogging Anna’s every move. Second, there’s a lawyer on the opposite side of every case who just doesn’t like Anna. And third, there’s Aiden Devlin’s ex-girlfriend, who decides to descend upon the sleeping Idaho town like a bird of prey. It’s too bad she’s discovered dead…after finding herself on the wrong end of a potato gun, putting Anna top of the suspect list. Anna deals with every day as it arrives while juggling her developing relationship with Aiden, trying to pay her rent by finding at least one client who pays, and finally by partnering with her Nonna Albertini in the world’s most chaotic plan to match-make her sister with the Elk County’s prosecuting attorney, Nick Basanelli. It’s a good thing Anna has learned to thrive in chaos.

It’s been a while since I’ve read an Anna Albertini book, but it was easy to fall right back into her world. It’s no secret that I adore Rebecca Zanetti’s books. This series is a bit different than her other stuff, I’m not quite as invested, but I still always enjoy myself.

There is a certain bit of domesticity Anna and Aiden get to enjoy (very briefly) in this story that I really liked. While it’s obvious they care deeply for one another and there is definite chemistry between the two, they haven’t really been able to just relax into their relationship. Well, they still don’t here. But they are unquestionably much more of a team in this book.

Anna is able to fill in some blanks when it comes to Aiden’s past. There’s an ex-girlfriend and others he used to work with that come to town, giving her a more complete picture. She doesn’t know it all, by far. A man who has worked undercover for years in the DEA isn’t an open book by any means. Plus, it seems with each introduction there comes more trouble into their lives.

Aiden is still extremely protective of Anna. Her antics drive him bonkers, but he’s starting to trust that she is (for the most part) able to handle herself. Trouble just seems to find Anna, sometimes at no fault of her own. And Anna is trying a lot harder to think before reacting. These things together are strengthening this couple and it’s lovely to watch their relationship grow.

As I said, this style of writing and story is a bit different than I am used to with this author. But it’s a fun break from some of her more intense stories.
