Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

After a brief stint in the Mayor’s Office, Detective Constable Cat Kinsella is back at the London Metropolitan Police, wisecracking with her partner Luigi Parnell and trying to avoid the wrath of the boss, DI Kate Steele. But for Cat and Parnell, it’s serious business when a young Australian woman turns up dead after a party thrown by her new boss. The initial investigation of Naomi Petrovic’s murder points to Joseph Madden, the owner of a coffee shop around the corner from police headquarters. Madden insists he’s innocent, that he was home with his wife Rosa at the time of the murder. When police question her, Rosa contradicts his alibi, swearing that she was home alone. While the team builds its case against Joseph, Cat is tasked with getting to the heart of the Maddens’ marriage. Cat knows that one of them is lying—but the question of which one, and why, is far more complicated than she could have expected. As she tries to balance the demands of the investigation with a budding romance and unresolved family drama, Cat has to decide how far she’ll go to keep her own past mistakes buried.

I read this for Pick Pong-a-thon as my 2nd chance for an author book and ya know, I'm just not sure that I'm going to move on to book three. I like Cat well enough, Kate and Parnell are also characters that I really enjoy, but it's the dark side of Cat's life that I just honestly don't care about. I hate that she has a boyfriend that she's constantly lying to and also keeping a secret from everyone because of how her mafia family is tied to his sisters death and how her mafia family is a one way trip to jail for her.

It's like, the shoe has to drop at some point and I'm tired of being strung along while I wait for it to happen. I can tell by reviews of book three that it doesn't happen there either so... I'm just wondering if it's worth my time to read it. I am intrigued by the serial killer thing for book three but *gah* I just don't know what I want to do.

Basically I've given books 1 and 2 both three stars so... I'm just a bit *meh* about the whole thing.
