Saffron returns to town after finishing her degree. She wants to work for her father's company, but he doesn't think that she is worthy. She meets Ethan at a city cleanup event that she organized and there are immediate sparks. They end up working together even though their companies are often rivals. However, this is where Saffron's inexperience shows up a bit, because she allows emotion and her new relationship with Ethan to color her business decision and sense. Ethan gives her good business advice while still trying to maintain a relationship with her. Saffron tries to explain her relationship to her parents and they are resistant at best. She enlists her brother to help, but business and past decisions are coloring their beliefs about Ethan.
Ethan is the ultimate book boyfriend in a lot of ways. He's willing to go out of his way to mend fences with Saffron's parents for her sake as well as planning a perfect date in a matter of hours just to make her feel special. Saffron's character grows into herself throughout the story; she really is the spoiled princess at the beginning of the story, but she learns to stand on her own.
