It’s hot and humid, the cicadas are buzzing, and there’s violence in the air.

Horror books and short stories set in the Deep South.

Think: swamps, bayous, bullfrogs, Spanish moss, hauntings, haints, voodoo/hoodoo, monsters hidden in plain sight, structural violence, and the oppressive weight of history.

Books that have queer vampires. Need I say more? (more so a list of books I have read and books to read this Halloween season)

It's Dracula Day! So we've picked out some of our favorite books featuring queer vampires. Beware of expected bites. (This list is presented by Duck Prints Press, the indie publisher focused on publishing queer art and stories by queer creators! A group of us collaborate to make these recommendations.)

W/W and M/M vampires. Most of these books are primarily within the horror and fantasy genres, rather than romance, but have elements of romance in them.

books either about the goth subculture, contain goth characters, or are synonymous with the subculture itself.

This is one of my favourite movie genres so I thought I’d make a list for books!

Books from Chapter 8 from Paperbacks from Hell by Grady Hendrix. This chapter focuses on slasher type horror and serial killer horror. In the 70s and 80s serial killers found their way into the popular zeitgeist and news for the first time. As Hendrix notes of the panic that ensued, “… and in a flash the scariest motive for murder was no motive at all.” (205, Paperbacks from Hell by Grady Hendrix). After all, nothing is scarier than a killer who kills just for the thrill.

Horror books that either primarily or exclusively take place in Louisiana. Tried to stick to horror and not venture out into thriller territory!
