Recs if you like Africa Risen: A New Era of Speculative Fiction...

Representations of the Black experience through fantasy, science fiction, and speculative fiction. Recommendations welcome!

Big vibes and big hair cover art books. (It's not a f*ckin 'cloud bob' Vogue).

A set of (mostly genre) short story anthologies. A way to get a taste of a bunch of authors and styles all at once!

My favourite books by BIPOC authors in a range of different genres (though I primarily read fantasy and romance) (only first book for a series added, unless not directly linked)

Fantasy, Romantasy, Science Fiction, and Speculative Fiction books written by authors of the diaspora

... keeps the boredom away! 😁

Anthologies and single-author collections with a focus on genre fiction and marginalized authors. Suggestions always welcome.

These Diverse Baseline Challenge was created by @bookish.millennial & @themargherita.s (on instagram). In 2025, the goal is to read 1 book by a racialized author each month. This challenge is meant to encourage readers to try genres they historically don’t reach for, find new-to-them racialized authors, and to encourage reflection on our reading habits.

This is a mix of recommendations by the challenge organizers and myself.

Science fiction and fantasy anthologies and story collections written and edited by BIPOC and/or focused on the experiences of BIPOC.

I love anthologies. Short fiction curated around a theme or a collection by an author I like have been some of the most rewarding reading I’ve ever done. The following are some of my favorites, from sci-fi, to dystopian, to YA, with a few of my favorite short fiction collections from single authors in there as well (particularly those who’s work falls into the sci-fi, fantasy or speculative genres)

Work in Progress Suggestions welcome!
