Recs if you like House of Monstrous Women...

“Tao po!” (“I’m human!”) is a greeting used to check if someone’s home. It originated from a pre-colonial belief that monsters, or aswang, couldn’t imitate speech. People would call out “Tao po, hindi aswang!” (“I’m human, not a monster!”) to reassure homeowners and to be invited inside. If a visitor knocks without speaking, beware! This list features Filipino horror and supernatural novels, where horror is not only from monsters and magic, but also from the grim realities of Filipino society.

in the first edition of ‘the monstrous-feminine’, barbara creed challenges the dominant representation of women in horror films as victims, arguing that patriarchal ideology constructs women as monstrous because of their sexuality (or lack thereof).

later, creed reinterprets the monstrous-feminine as a being who embraces her body and reclaims her otherness. in line with this contemporary vision, these are books which use horror to redefine notions of ‘womanhood’.

Fiction books with at least one main character identifying as Asian and LGBTQ (queer and/or trans) — continuously updated!

Authors from the Philippines & diaspora no specific genres; it’s like a Pinoy library on shuffle lol

I haven’t read every book on this list, but I have finished most of the titles towards the bottom. Recommendations always welcome! Maraming salamat, mga kapwa 🤎

Another collection of sapphic books that are tagged as horror, thriller, or mystery on Goodreads that I hope to one day read a few of.

These books are from @fromthemixedupdesk's bingo card on Bindery and Instagram. Of 191 works nominated for the Bram Stoker award, only 26 authors are women.

Books by Filipino authors that I love/are on my tbr suggestions are welcome! :)

a lot of what i read is what i see talked about, books at the top of search results, books face out at bookshops, etc. i never really stopped to consider how many of those books were written by white authors, so i have set a task to be more conscious of the cultural and ethnic diversity in my reading and thought to make a list to keep track of what i’ve read and what i want to read.

please feel free to comment any recommendations!

A list of some of my favorite sapphic horror books

Books with sapphic relationships where they both live, and/or have a happy ending. This collection of books has been recommended to me based off of a post I made in the sapphic across genres forum. This is made in order to try combat the media's tendencies of killing off the sapphics (when they actually do decide to give us representation). please be aware that I haven't read most of these, so they may not be entirely accurate to the list title. I am open to any suggestions as well!

Sometimes queer, sometimes not, but always feminist - these horror stories tackle patriarchy and ideas about what roles people (are supposed to) play in it.

queer people being queer in historical fiction

What makes a house haunted? Ghosts? Grief? Bad decisions in the basement?

This list explores homes possessed by spirits, secrets, and sometimes just extremely questionable architecture. Some are literally haunted. Others are haunted by what happened inside them. Because sometimes it’s not the ghost. It’s the house.

Sapphic horror books I love/that are on my tbr♥️ Suggestions are welcome :)
