Ellie was so annoying and so problematic. And if you ask me, she needed therapy. Her character was a lot. She was a disaster and had horribly impulsive ideas. And she never really had to take accountability for her actions. And if you ask me, I have no idea what Hugh even saw in her. Because from what I saw, she gave him nothing. This is one of those books where the happy ending was not what I wanted. I honestly think she should’ve done more to make it happen. I’m very disappointed on how it turned out. I mean, sure. Ellie was horribly by her ex, and even the town and the aftermath of what he asked did. But she had zero coping skills and pretty immature responses to adversity. I think the biggest problem is that the conflict was just stupid. What happened was completely blown out of proportion in my opinion, so it made the last 20% or so of the book kind of unbearable, because Ellie was pretty unbearable.
To be fair, some of the things that happened were pretty funny, and I did enjoy reading some parts of this. But I didn’t really care too much for the beginning or the end.
This gripped me RIGHT AWAY with the small town vibes and hilarity … soon I was completely lost to this novel as it also packs a cozy mystery, and absolute chaos. Toss in ‘I Love Lucy’ style antics (only more plausible / less ridiculous) and I was dying of laughter before long. Monroe is quickly becoming one of my top authors, the more of her work I read.
