Daniel, Deconstructed

James Ramos

Enjoyment: 5.0Quality: 5.0Characters: 5.0Plot: 5.0

A nerdy high schooler learns to embrace his main-character energy in this witty and heart-healing ode to movie tropes, meet-cutes, and LGBTQ+ love. Photographer and film buff Daniel Sanchez learned a long time ago that the only way to get by in an allistic world is to mask his autism and follow the script. Which means he knows that boisterous, buff, and beautiful soccer superstars like his best friend, Mona Sinclair, shouldn’t be wasting time hanging out with introverts who prefer being behind the camera. So when Daniel meets a new classmate, Gabe Mendes, who is tall, mysterious, nonbinary, and—somehow—as cool as Mona, Daniel knows exactly how this is going to play out. Mona and Gabe will meet cute, win their nominations for Homecoming Court, and ride off into the sunset together. Daniel just needs to do a little behind-the-scenes directing. But matchmaking means stepping into the mystifying and illogical world of love, dating, and relationships, where nothing is as it seems and no one knows their lines. And when Daniel finds himself playing a starring role in this romance, he’ll question everything he thought he knew about himself and his place in the world.

this book was SO fantastic. it was my first James Ramos book and i will so quickly be reading their other book.

i just, i loved it so much??

first, it had all the classic high school shenanigans but like, not in the normal high school portrayal? there were “cliques” and groups of people who stuck together and were friends with each other but no one group had any negative feelings towards the others. everyone just coexisted. it was beautiful and a MUCH more accurate portrayal of how little high schoolers care 😂

second, it had SO MUCH FANTASTIC, NECESSARY REPRESENTATION? autism rep, aromantic rep, non-binary rep, trans rep, the list goes on. and it was all so fucking well done!! Daniel was such a wonderful, honest person; Gabe was so charismatic and open; Mona was such a badass and so loyal. also, Aisha? Bridge? PHOEBE? just. fucking. incredible.

third, the characters and their relationship dynamics were so reFRESHING. everyone communicated!! like adults!! and they’re only like 17!! there was so much active listening and active communicating and it made my heart so happy.

this book was so beautifully written. and so nerdy!! it was so charmingly nerdy. so much in depth conversation about gaming and LARP and dark rooms and photography! not that photography is specifically nerdy, but !!!!

    wonderful. just wonderful.
    perfect, perfect, perfect.
    another EASY ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
