A House of Cloaks & Daggers (The Gift War, #1)

It's like The Cruel Prince meets A Court of Thorns and Roses, and they take The Infernal Devices out for drinks. Fans of whimsical romance, epic fantasy, and laugh-out-loud banter will be captivated by A House of Cloaks & Daggers, a dark and twisty tale of secrets and self-discovery. With an angsty slow-burn, morally grey men, complicated as hell fated mates, and enemies-to-lovers that give "touch her and die" vibes, this book will have you in a chokehold from start to finish. No hexes required, promise. ~~~ Faeries can’t lie, but they can keep a secret. He blinked a few times as he swung his gaze back to me. “I knew this would happen,” he murmured, beginning to slur as his eyes fought to slam shut once more. “I’m so in love with you, it’s made me sick.” When Auralie Roberts first meets the man of her dreams, he’s being tortured in them—literally. Obsessed with saving him from the monsters armed with iron weapons, she craves sleep for three long months, if only for the chance to see him again. The day one of those monsters hunts her into the real world, Aura meets Wren, a cocky High Fae man who saves her life and explains that human women like her are being hunted and killed. To protect those she loves most—including herself—Aura makes a bargain with Wren and finds herself fleeing into Faerie to seek protection under the High King. Instead of salvation, Aura only finds secrets. Dark, twisted truths about herself, her family, the High King of Faerie, and even the man from her dreams. He’s real, but can she save him before it’s too late? And when she finds out who he is, will she still want to?

Oh, man! I absolutely LOVED this. Aura is normal. She has a normal life until these creepy ass creatures start hunting her down by scent, then makes a deal with a High Fae to travel back to Faerie with him to keep her mom and sister safe. So many secrets and betrayals 😭

𝑩𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒖𝒄𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒖𝒏𝒏𝒚 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒇𝒂𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔.

The Fae can't lie, but they are 𝘮𝘢𝘢𝘢𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 of language and sarcasm. I didn't know whether to laugh or throttle Wren, Lucais, and Morgoya😩😂 I felt for Aura hard! That poor woman was thrown into an absolute chess master's game barely knowing how far to move her pieces. She absolutely held her own though!

”𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒖𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒅𝒆, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏?”

There aren't a whole bunch of side characters in AHoC&D, but plenty of people were mentioned that makes me excited to meet them throughout the series. I pieced together the truth pretty quickly, but it took NOTHING away from the story or big reveal at the end. It was like when you know who the killer is on a show but the detective hasn't figured it out yet😩 I wanted to scream it at her, but it made all of the bullying so much sweeter because my ass was digging into everything y'all😂

“𝑰’𝒎 𝒔𝒐 𝒊𝒏 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒚𝒐𝒖, 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒎𝒂𝒅𝒆 𝒎𝒆 𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒌.”

And the big reveal?! I feel like Enyd, Aura, and Morgoya are going to be tight af🤞🏻 They all give the same vibes and I'm here for it! I cannot wait for A Palace of Smoke & Mirrors. My jaw was on the floor when I realized the book ended on me😭

“𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒎𝒚 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒎𝒆, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕.”

Thank you SO so much to the author for the gifted copy! This was incredible🖤🖤
