(4.5 rounded up) Honestly, for a debut novel, this was an absolute blast! I was lucky enough to attend a signing with Evan Leikam and Joe Abercrombie (which was literally so fun), and hearing Evan talk about the direction he wanted to take the story really enhanced the whole reading experience for me.
I read and listened to the audiobook simultaneously, and the narrator absolutely crushed it. The performance brought so much energy to the story!!
If I had one critique, it’s that I wished a few of the characters were more fleshed out. I wanted a better understanding of everyone’s motives, but I also suspect that might’ve been intentional and setting the stage for more reveals down the line. The ending was super satisfying and left me genuinely excited for book two. Can’t wait to see where things go next!
rating: 3.75 stars i love finding hidden gem fantasy books!! i was getting burned out on large scale fantasy books so this single POV, focused story was exactly what i needed. it was such a good palette cleanser between my longer reads and i will definitely be continuing the series. evan leikam’s prose was a perfect balance of bleak and comedic that carried the plot along smoothly. i also strongly recommend the audiobook - moira quirk absolutely killed it, no pun intended
