And Don't Look Back

Rebecca Barrow

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

After her mother’s death, a teen pieces together the truth of her family’s past and what her mom was hiding from in this thriller that’s perfect for fans of Courtney Summers and Tiffany D. Jackson. Harlow Ford has spent her entire life running, caught in her mother’s wake as they flit from town to town, hiding from a presence that Harlow isn’t even sure is real. In each new place, Harlow takes on a new name and personality, and each time they run, she leaves another piece of herself behind. When Harlow and her mom set off on yet another 3 a.m. escape, they are involved in a car accident that leaves Harlow’s mother fatally wounded. Before she dies, she tells Harlow two things: where to find the key to a safety deposit box and to never stop running. In the box, Harlow finds thirty grand in cash, life insurance documents, and several fake IDs for both herself and her mom—an on-the-run essentials kit. But Harlow also finds a photograph of her mom as a teenager with two other girls, the deed to a house in a town she’s never heard of, and a handful of newspaper clippings discussing the disappearance of a woman named Eve Kennedy, Harlow’s grandmother…relics of a part of Harlow’s life she never knew existed. With these tantalizing clues about her mother’s secrets and the power to choose her own future for the first time, Harlow realizes she has two choices: keep fleeing her mom’s ghosts or face down the nebulous threat that’s been hanging over her for her entire life.

~~Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC!~~

This was a good mystery! I got hooked real quick and every guess I had was thrown out with every piece of info that was revealed. I kinda wish it got to it sooner, because it took at least twenty-percent of the book until the story caught up with the premise. The beginning was Harlow alone contemplating her mom's death and the mystery surrounding her whole life. I feel like it should have started with Harlow at Crescent Ridge and maybe the details of her life told in past tense or flashbacks so we as readers could understand Harlow's life before rather than having it all told to us in exposition before mom died.

Another thing I wished was more clear was that this book is really sapphic! Not only is Harlow a lesbian (Yes, the word is used in the text), but a lot of the major women characters are sapphic, including her own mom. Harlow does have a brief romance with a girl, but it's not a major focus and they don't even get together by the end, which is probably for the best. The last scene between them did feel really hasty and rushed, as it was the last couple pages of the book. I wish their conclusion was better handled.

But, overall, this was a good read. It really is best to go in blind and try to guess as the mystery goes on; it's what made the book an enjoyable experience for me.

This book was a whirlwind, and I'm shocked.

Barrow's doesn't only throw just throw twists at you she keeps them coming and tricks you into wondering what the hell is coming next.

I devoured this book and just wanted to keep reading, to see where this book would end, and it was worth it.

I loved Harlow as a main character, and I loved her even more as a POC character. She was just fab.

The only slight problem with this book was so much of it was just paragraphs upon paragraphs of writing and no breakup of dialogue. I honestly get it she's by herself and running but doesn't know whom from, but it was slightly just a tad too much at times.

The book also goes back to 'before', which gives us more clues, and I liked that, especially considering that twist at the end, I am mindblown.

Overall, I absolutely loved this book!
