The Seat Filler

The Seat Filler

She's sitting so close, it's hard to look away. The meet-cute award goes to dog groomer Juliet Nolan. It’s one of Hollywood’s biggest nights when she volunteers as a seat filler and winds up next to movie heartthrob Noah freaking Douglas. Tongue tied and toes curling in her pink Converse, she pretends that she doesn’t have a clue who he is. It’s the only way to keep from swooning. She’s pretty and unpretentious, loves his dog, and is not a worshipping fan. No way Noah’s giving up on her, even if his affectionate pursuit comes with a bump: Juliet has a pathological fear of kissing and the disappointments that follow. What odds does romance have without that momentous, stupendous, once-in-a-lifetime first smooch? Patient, empathetic, and carrying personal burdens of his own, Noah suggests a remedy: they rehearse. The lessons begin. The guards come down. But there’s another hitch they weren’t betting on. As for that cue-the-orchestra-and-roll-credits happy ending? It might take more than practice to make it perfect.

Fun and Funny. This was a fun, funny read featuring a role I'd heard of but had never considered in depth - seat fillers at awards shows. This book gives some interesting looks at some things that people don't often consider, but does it in ways such that a joke or some other hilarity is never far away. And for some reason I kept imagining Noah as Josh Brolin, even though that totally does NOT match the actual physical characterization of the character. But it was so prevalent in my mind that it had to get into the review. Truly an excellent book, and a world I wouldn't mind coming back to. Very much recommended.

Full disclosure, I DNFed The Seat Filler fairly early in the book. I enjoy the celebrity romance trope a lot, but this one was simply bad. I just couldn't handle the clunky writing and sheer lack of appeal in either the cringily awkward main character or the utterly boring love interest (aka Adam Driver, which...oof, those acknowledgments! and the absolute obviousness of Noah being Driver! and the sheer yikes of it all!). From what I've read in other reviews regarding issues like ableism and casual fatphobia, I think I dodged a bullet in quitting early.
