“Goats respected her. Goats respect very little, but they recognized some of themselves in her, and so they gave her what courtesy goats give to each other. (This is hardly any, of course, but a trifle more than none at all.)"
Jackalope Wives and Other Stories is a collection of T. Kingfisher stories which explore various kinds of folk/fairy tales, some of which take place in swamps and others in the deserts in the American West. As ever with T. Kingfisher, it is largely irreverent, sometimes bittersweet and frequently entertaining. I'm coming to expect pretty much any T. Kingfisher story to be a 4 or 5 star read for me, her humor just works for me and I love the way that she plays with fairytales.
Some of my favorites in this collection were:
The Dryad's Shoe - 4/5
Basically Cinderella but with a dryad instead of a fairy godmother and a grumpy and uncooperative Cinderella.
Razorback - 4/5
Don't mess with a witch's familiar, even if the familiar is a little unusual.
Bird Bones - 5/5
One of my favorites ever. Uppity old lady + intelligent birds = win
The Tomato Thief - 5/5
Excellent blend of various folklore, including jackalope wives and train gods. So much fun.
If you enjoy snarky commentary on fairytales and uppity ladies, this is an excellent collection to pick up, highly recommend!
