I have to admit that as someone who isn't overwhelmingly familiar with the DC Universe, this was a little confusing at first. I had previously read Secret Origins which gave me some background on Hal Jordan but this one is pulling in Hal's time as Parallax, the alternate-universe jerk Superman/boy-Prime (I never completely understood which he was) and Cyborg Superman, all of whom I had to Wikipedia to understand. This isn't a complaint about the book but rather a warning to anyone else who wants to read it and isn't already familiar with these characters. I'm starting to think that Geoff Johns is a genius when it comes to Green Lanterns because he writes the most amazing stories. In volume 1, Sinestro escapes prison on Oa and creates the Sinestro Corps, a group of lanterns whose rings are powered by fear rather than willpower and whose color is yellow. The way that Sinestro understands the Guardians and is adept at predicting their movements and forcing them to follow the line that he wants was really impressive. The Sinestro Corps continually challenge the Green Lanterns on both a physical and a psychological level and it was fascinating to see how the Green Lanterns adapted to the change that the Guardians introduced towards the end of the volume. I won't say exactly what it is here since I don't want to spoil anything. The artwork is absolutely gorgeous but there's a lot going on in every panel so it's well worth the time to read carefully. Before this one, I was only familiar with Hal Jordan as a Green Lantern so it was really interesting to see Guy Gardner, John Stewart and Kyle Rayner and how they differed from Hal in both their outlook and their tactics. If you like Green Lantern at all and even if you're just a more general superhero fan, this is definitely one I'd recommend!
