Rising Queen (Court of the Sea Fae, #3)

C.N. Crawford

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

My mate lies in a rotting cage at the bottom of the sea, and I'll do anything to get him back. Maybe he's the devil himself, but he made the ultimate sacrifice for me. When my plan backfires, I'm left with a lethal hex surging in my veins. Now, I only have a few days to live. And Salem? He's wrestling with a dark curse of his own, one that he says makes him burn.. He keeps saying this ends with one of us dead, that our story is a tragedy. But I'm determined to rewrite the tale fate has penned for us. If I can't, he warns I could die at his hands.

    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

I did enjoy this book better than the others. It felt like it flowed a bit better.

Like with the second book, we get a split POV between Salem and Aenor, giving us a glimpse into both of their heads. There are times when it uses this fact to trick the reader, specifically when in the Court of Silk. Most of that section is told from the perspective of one of them, leaving you to wonder what's going on with the other.

I'm unsure if this book worked better due to it being the last and thus the newest in the series or if it was simply a matter of the plot flowing better and me being used to the characters. I'd say it's the latter but this is the first series I have read from this author so I'm not sure. The next series I will be reading is a bit newer, written in 2021, so we will see how that goes.

I did enjoy the twists in this series though, as I have seen the "misunderstanding" trope used so much, seeing it used here in much the same way as I have seen in other works did make it a little frustrating but that was personally just me. I understand why the misunderstanding trope is used as there cannot be an easy path to a happy ending. There has to be bumps and hurtles to go through. Otherwise, the ending does not feel earned.

After everything Salem and Aenor go through, this ending feels earned and I actually like how it was done. My enjoyment of this book in the series gives me good hope for the next series I will be reading. Though I do have some personal complaints with how some situations came to be. Just a personal gripe but can this girl never get ahold of a bra? The absence of a bra just seems to be used to paint the guys in this series in even worse lights, even as I know that an actual guy in the same situation would also act as they do. Just a personal thing.
