Found (The Missing, #1)

Margaret Peterson Haddix

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Thirteen-year-old Jonah has always known that he was adopted, and he's never thought it was any big deal. Then he and a new friend, Chip, who's also adopted, begin receiving mysterious letters. The first one says, "You are one of the missing." The second one says, "Beware! They're coming back to get you." Jonah, Chip, and Jonah's sister, Katherine, are plunged into a mystery that involves the FBI, a vast smuggling operation, an airplane that appeared out of nowhere - and people who seem to appear and disappear at will. The kids discover they are caught in a battle between two opposing forces that want very different things for Jonah and Chip's lives. Do Jonah and Chip have any choice in the matter? And what should they choose when both alternatives are horrifying? With Found, Margaret Peterson Haddix begins a new series that promises to be every bit as suspenseful as Among the Hidden, and proves her, once again, to be a master of the page-turner.

A plane pulls up to an airport out of nowhere; there is no pilot, no flight crew, and the passengers are all babies.

Fast forward thirteen years and meet Jonah, a well-adjusted boy who is adopted. One day though, Jonah receives a letter in the mail with no return address stating that he is one of the missing. His friend Chip, who lives down the street, receives a letter too and to his surprise learns that he is adopted as well. Jonah’s sister, Katherine (who is the actual child of Jonah’s adopted parents and one year younger), soon becomes involved and just as interested, if not more, in solving the mystery too. What follows is an eerie mystery filled with FBI agents, time travelling, and a hunt for all those babies that mysteriously appeared thirteen years before.

What an exciting and intense this book turned out to be. Right from the start, I knew that I was going to really get pulled into Jonah, Chip, and Katherine’s story. Not only that, but Haddix has left readers with a gigantic cliffhanger that is surely going to make all readers want to keep going with the series! What I also found interesting was how quickly I blew through this book, there is a lot that goes on, and a lot of ideas to wrap your head around, but that did not stop me from devouring this book.

This would be a great choice for a tween book club. I think that both boys and girls will enjoy this story and come back asking for more. Also, this would be an interesting read aloud in a classroom setting too. Overall, this is a great choice!

Got this book in a collection of audio books, and I must say I rather enjoyed this quick book. I felt like the thought processes of Jonah and his sister were absolutely perfect--I identified a lot with Jonah even though I wasn't adopted.
Honestly didn't see the whole 'time' aspect coming, and though I think that the "bad guys" were completely laughable and unrealistic, I was at least surprised.
May continue this series if my library has the next ones on audio, otherwise I probably won't. Especially since it appears that the next one will be quite a different style of setting....
