Unfortunately I’m DNFing this, which is weird to say because it’s so short and usually I just stick it out but I’m not finding the enjoyment in this.
Liu’s writing is phenomenal and this is actually my first time reading his work, and while his word usage and sentence structures are easy to read, I’m not feeling any sense of enjoyment while reading this. The more I progressed the more I became bored and my mind started to wander.
I understand what Liu was aiming for and to be honest when it started I was on board and was finding connections with Kay and her struggle with her art, he makes some very good observations and statements presented in an engaging manner, but after the political aspect came into play something changed in the execution of the work and it started to feel less like a story and more like a topic piece. I personally don’t find those interesting to read and have always struggled to enjoy them.
It’s not a terrible piece and I think if you’re interested you should give it a shot, I can admit I’m not the intended audience.
