These are some of my favorites and books I want to read--nonfiction that reads like fiction or is otherwise compelling. If you're intimidated by books on history, science, memoir, or other subgenres in nonfiction, start here.

Nonfiction books to understand our fellow animals and, through them, ourselves

All about wildlife, nature, and restoring what we humans have lost. Attempting to include mostly inspirational books, but some may be harder hitting.

Non-fiction books about personal experiences and connections made with wild animals. These books were chosen based on the relationship between author and animal, mostly from rehabilitation perspectives or what we can learn from them, and not to encourage captivity or harm conservation efforts.

Nominees and winners of every category of the Good Reads Choice Awards for the year of 2025. Some books overlap so they were only entered once.
