Thank you to Cassandra Khaw, Tor Nightfire, and Storygraph for the print ARC! I won this book in a giveaway and all thoughts and opinions are my own. This book focuses on our main character, Alessa, and a host of other students and one teacher assistant during their time at Hellebore, an institute for those with the power to end the world. We flash back and forth between before the events leading to our cast being in the library, and seeing things unfold in the library. Khaw did a wonderful job of offsetting an incredibly gory world with humor, often with a sexual tone. Things could easily become very cringey if Khaw hadn't handled the mix well. A character in skinny jeans and Converse says "goth mommy" multiple times and it's funny. Pegging, threesomes, and similar raunchy humor is used throughout although please note there is absolutely no spice. Gore and sexual humor won't be for everyone but this really worked for me. I found the characters and the unveilings of their powers and backstories to be the most interesting part of the story. Finishing the book made me want to go back for a reread immediately. This was my first Khaw book but certainly won't be my last. Be sure to pick up a copy of The Library at Hellebore when it comes out in July!
