Thirteen-year-old Stewart is academically brilliant but socially clueless. Fourteen-year-old Ashley is the undisputed “It” girl in her class, but her grades stink. Their worlds are about to collide when Stewart and his dad move in with Ashley and her mom. Stewart is trying to be 89.9 percent happy about it, but Ashley is 110 percent horrified. She already has to hide the real reason her dad moved out; “Spewart” could further threaten her position at the top of the social ladder. They are complete opposites. And yet, they have one thing in common: they—like everyone else—are made of molecules.

I initially put this book on my to read list because of the cover and the chemistry reference in the title. I had little idea what the premise of the book was before diving in. We Are All Made of Molecules is a quick and entertaining read. The narrative alternates between the point of view of Stewart, a 13 year-old boy, and Ashley, a 14 year-old girl. Their families have been grafted together by their parents relationship and navigating their new lives is a major theme of the novel.

Stewart was a great character. He tells everything like it is and is very accepting of everyone. He faces this new beginning with grace and tries to befriend his sort-of step-sister. Ashley, on the other hand, has few redeeming qualities. For most of the book she is a brat. She is constantly throwing tantrums and is extremely entitled. She is manipulative with her friends and cares only about her image. Towards the end of the book she does realise she's a cow, but it takes a very extreme event for her to come to this realisation.

I enjoyed reading We Are All Made of Molecules; the characters are complex and it explores a lot of important themes. Through this, Nielsen manages to write in a light and accessable manner, which is a tough task!
