Bring on those Gen Y memories! A list of books likely to give people born between 1981 and 1996 a lot of feelings.

This list is for those of us who grew up eagerly awaiting the Scholastic Book Fair, watching Reading Rainbow (or Wishbone!), and dreaming of a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.

Note: these are not books published in 1981-1996, but books that had a hold on the millennial generation.

I've loved these books since a family friend suggested I listen to Wild Magic as a kid. Each set of 2-4 books follows a particular character and their journey through a world populated with familiar faces from other books, but these series don't have to be read in order of publication to be enjoyed. Highly recommend First Test as a fun one to try out!

Tamora Pierce's Tortall series, and associated works. Let's explore all the land has to offer. All books in English, where possible graphic novels are included. In a time when female fantasy authors were few and far between, these authors carved out their own space in the genre. These stories might not be mainstream hits today, but they are full of brilliant magic, deep characters, and/or worlds that helped shape the genre. I love YA. It can suck pretty bad when the books try to copy each other. But when some of those gems pop up...wowza! Who knew you could tell such a hard-hitting story without having to resort to 1,000 pages & sex?
