We like to imagine that the digitisation of our lives will make them easier to access for future generations. But what happens when software becomes outdated? When data centres are destroyed? When huge social media companies ‘lose’ our information? The Annotated Daniel imagines a digital archaeologist of the future discovering the corrupted remains of a Facebook profile accredited to a self-styled social media prophet known only as Daniel, and assigning his garbled teachings an importance which they do not necessarily deserve, purely by virtue of their remoteness in time. The text is accompanied by explanatory notes designed to provide elucidation for a future audience, as well as enigmatically biomorphic visual poems, recovered from Daniel’s Facebook profile. The book questions how we assign value in literature, where we find beauty and wisdom, and imagines the digital legacy we are leaving for future generations as we struggle to navigate the huge changes of the intensely rapid and confusing digital age.
