Kill Creek

Scott Thomas

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

At the end of a dark prairie road, nearly forgotten in the Kansas countryside, is the Finch House. For years it has remained empty, overgrown, abandoned. Soon the door will be opened for the first time in decades. But something is waiting, lurking in the shadows, anxious to meet its new guests… When best-selling horror author Sam McGarver is invited to spend Halloween night in one of the country’s most infamous haunted houses, he reluctantly agrees. At least he won’t be alone; joining him are three other masters of the macabre, writers who have helped shape modern horror. But what begins as a simple publicity stunt will become a fight for survival. The entity they have awakened will follow them, torment them, threatening to make them a part of the bloody legacy of Kill Creek.

It's been a while since I've read a pure horror novel, and I'm glad it was this one. I devoured this book. At first I thought a 500+ page (my copy had 549 pages) horror novel was insane, but as I kept reading I wasn't even aware of the trail of pages I was leaving behind.

I did have an issue with the way T.C. Moore was written, but that's usually my general grudge against men writing women. She was obsessed with sex even though there was absolutely no reason for it, she thought she was better than everyone because she wasn't mainstream but was still well-known, and adhered to an insanely strict schedule for her writing and her life because I guess women can't be good at something without being overbearing and aggressive about it.

<spoiler>There was also a sex scene when the house sent an illusion or hallucination or whatever it was of Moore to Sam. It wasn't necessary, especially since there had been no attraction for him to even fall for that? It just kind of happened and then he forgot about it so it definitely wasn't that big of a plot point, especially since the house already knew about his mother before that scene.</spoiler>

Aside from those two things, though? I thought this was amazing. I was spooked and disgusted and cringing almost the entire time and I had so much fun reading it. I love when the horror novels I read can also scare me.

I also loved that it didn't end with everything all tied up nicely and everyone was okay. It maybe would have been expected if I'd actually cared to think about the words that were being said and the fact that Moore was still alive after her encounter with Daniel, but I was too busy cringing from all the bone grinding to care all that much about the foreshadowing.

If I had more friends that read horror, I'd definitely recommend this to them.
