He came to Rose Bend to hide. But she’ll help him find everything he’s been missing. Leontyne Dennison is on a love hiatus. And that’s just fine, because perfectionist Leo is hyperfocused on the success of her family’s southern Berkshires inn. Volunteering for Rose Bend’s annual spring festival is certain to boost business—and provide the perfect distraction from men—until Leo comes face-to-face with Owen Stafford, the hottest one-night stand of her life. A retired professional football player, Owen came to Rose Bend to escape after a devastating car accident ended his career. Enter the woman he hasn’t forgotten in the year since their sizzling night together. When Owen’s parents arrive, threatening his low profile, Leo helps keep the peace by pretending to be Owen’s girlfriend. Rose Bend was never part of Owen’s long game, but Leo’s increasingly convincing TLC is starting to give Owen every reason to stay.

Two damaged people, trying NOT to be in a relationship but then being in a relationship SO HARD AND SO HOT. Damn.
CW for miscarriage, panic attacks, and Dads that only care about your football arm.
Leo and Owen are two damaged people trying to not be in a relationship and then are in a relationship SO HARD. They both work through a lot over the story, together and on their own. Lots of feelings.
This is sort of second chance romance. Leo and Owen had a one night stand that was amazing for both of them. But she snuck out in the morning, and he had given her a fake name (not that she looked for him). They run into each other in Rose Bend. Owen is hiding out, recovering after a car accident that left him physically scarred and in rehab. Leo stops by to recruit him for a volunteer event. Owen is so embarrassed about his scars, he PRETENDS NOT TO REMEMBER HER. Leo is devastated. And so begins their antagonistic relationship.
They don’t get along at first, both hiding their feelings behind a front of not caring or trying to be perfect. Leo is out on a girls night when she opens up to Owen and from there they are friendlier to each other. This didn’t make me cry as much as book 1 in the series, but there is a lot of emotional work done on the page by both characters.
Naima Simone has said a coming book will feature Jenna, the villain from book 1, and boy does she have some work to do. We see some of it done here for Jenna’s back story.
This copy also included a novella, ‘The Love List’ that was a cute, sexy story too.
Owen thought he could hide out in Rose Bend and wallow in his misery, but that all changes when Leontyne turns up at his door wanting his help. Oh boy was it a shock for them both when they realise thy know each other from an encounter a year ago. This story shows how people can show their vulnerability on the outside as well as the inside so never judge someone at first glance. Leo is the support Owen needs not only to accept what happened in the accident, but to also stand up for himself with his parents while he helps Leo see she doesn't need to do it all alone and you can't control everything.
