    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Sophie’s father was disowned after marrying her mother (an opera singer). When Sophie is orphaned at the age of 12, her grandfather agrees to pay for her schooling until she is 18 and then, she is on her own. Sophie ends up supporting herself by gambling. One night she makes a wager with Jack, the Duke of Ware. If Sophie wins, Jack must pay her 5,000 pounds. If Jack wins, he gets one week of Sophie’s company. After a night of losing, Jack wins the final game and whisks Sophie away to his country property.

This book did not go exactly how I expected it to. Jack and Sophie spend a considerable amount of time together before they ever engage in an affair. They have incredible chemistry that they deny for quite awhile and fall for one another almost immediately. Since becoming Duke of Ware, Jack has always lived for duty and Sophie has lived to survive in hopes of attracting a safe, respectable husband. Once they meet each other, they decide to take what they can for as long as they can. I loved every second of their time together and I think this book definitely has one of my favorite epilogues! It also ends on a “cliffhanger” for the heroine of the next book.
