Recs if you like The Gathering Dark: An Anthology of Folk Horror...

In honour of Everybody Scream dropping tomorrow, here are books that are utterly delicious, magical, and sometimes a little bit dark. (Lots of folklore, some horror, and of course feminine rage)

This list features book covers illustrated by Baltimore-based artist Evangeline Gallagher. Their work features stark linework, stunning textures, and jarring imagery. From their website, "When they aren’t drawing they can be found volunteering with lizards and turtles at the National Aquarium, painting a mural with their friends at Upright Entity, or attending a DIY show in a warehouse somewhere. They possess the speed and enthusiasm of 10,000 illustrators."

These Diverse Baseline Challenge was created by @bookish.millennial & @themargherita.s (on instagram). In 2025, the goal is to read 1 book by a racialized author each month. This challenge is meant to encourage readers to try genres they historically don’t reach for, find new-to-them racialized authors, and to encourage reflection on our reading habits.
