Doesn't feel like its from 19 years ago, its older than me!
I was surprised at first, I thought this would be the sequel to 'Secret Vampire' but noooo... However it does connect back to the first book where we get to follow the Redfern's, Ash and his three runaway sisters Jade, Rowan and Kestrel, who is seeking refuge at their aunt Opal's house. We also meet Mary-Lynette, a name that kind of bothered me with its length and out of fashion touch, and her pessimistic younger brother with a tendency to believe that everything has a supernatural explanation, until he is faced with the supernatural.
The whole story is revolving around aunt Opal's murder, who could have done it? Drawn into this mess of mystery and danger, they find love and new sides of the same coin. People you thought you knew change over night, the world you felt safe in start to shake and in the end you can't even believe in yourself, because even you change over night.
My favorite character was definitely Ash, covered in his own self-worth and tendency for evil he is faced by the very thing he despised, the very thing he had tried to destroy for someone else, one word, karma. I like the way he tries to do the right thing by bringing his sister's home, not only for the sake of saving the family honor, also because he doesn't want them to end up dead. When the news hits him about aunt Opal he is genuinely sad, there are moments of affection but since no one expects him to be better, everyone wants him to be the alpha he doesn't have to change. Until he realizes that an alpha always needs an female alpha.
My favorite quote: "Fun - oh, no," Rowan said, dismayed. Jade knew she had caught part of Vic's thought and was trying very hard not to pry further. "Kestrel and Jade are much to young for anything like that. I'm sorry, but we have to say no."
Another great additions to the Night World series! It was really great seeing Ash grow and change. I only wish there had been a more in depth look at Jade and Mark's relationship.
