Camden (Pittsburgh Titans, #8)

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Camden Poe is the last of The Lucky Three , the surviving Pittsburgh Titans who weren’t on the team plane the night it went down. By all outward appearances, he’s adjusted to post-crash life well but inside he’s wrestling with the guilt of living. The catastrophe that killed the Pittsburgh Titans changed my entire world. My teammates were more than my friends—they were my brothers. I mourned their loss with the rest of the nation but then I did as I’ve been taught… I moved on. I focused on returning to the ice with the newly rebuilt team and put the tragedy behind me. Considering the circumstances, I adjusted well. Or so I thought. Now I’m plagued by nightmares of the crash and my play has suffered as a result. Facing the possibility of losing my place on the team, I need to pull myself together and fast. My buddy and linemate, Mitch Brandt died in the crash, leaving his wife Danica and son Travis behind to pick up the pieces of their shattered family. After reconnecting with Danica at a support group meeting, I find myself inexplicably drawn to helping her and her son move forward. What starts as two friends finding solace in one another following a tragedy becomes something more, leaving us both wondering if we deserve this chance. I feel as if I’m walking a precarious line between a man falling for an incredible woman and a man moving in on his dead friend’s wife. But one thing is crystal clear—I’ve found a peace with Danica that I wasn’t sure I’d ever have again. Now I need to find the confidence within myself to push past the insecurities and make sure she knows how important she is to me because if I don’t, I’ll lose the one thing that makes me truly complete.

    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Although Camden is one of the original 3 players who were not on the plane that crashed killing their entire team, I felt I didn’t know him as well as a lot of the other current players. Now that I know him, I love the guy. He is so sweet and caring.

While some of the other books in this series have dealt with loved ones of the deceased, (Stone is the brother of a player, the team owner lost her brother to the crash) this is the first time one of the widows gets another chance at love. I felt the author handled the grieving widow storyline quite well. There is never a question that Danica loved her husband and had a wonderful marriage. By all accounts, Mitch was a great guy and a fantastic dad. I hate when authors feel the need to make a relationship that ends in death “less than”. I person can love more than one person in their lifetime. Danica believes this to be true and knows her deceased husband would want her and their son to be happy and fulfilled.

Camden has a lot of guilt and grief. Grief he believed he had dealt with when the plane crash initially happened. But Camden’s idea of dealing with his grief is to shove it deep down and not deal with it, so it hasn’t worked out so well for him. He’s been having nightmares and his hockey has suffered. Luckily he has an understanding coach who pushes him toward things that will help him to heal.

The way Camden and Danica start spending time together is very organic. They were friends before Mitch’s death but haven’t seen each other much since. Danica’s way to deal with grief and to help her son deal with grief is very healthy and positive. That starts to rub off on Camden and eventually these two give into their chemistry. I love them together, Danica and Camden are very in tune with each other and they are great at discussing Mitch and not letting him become an elephant in the room for their growing relationship. I also love Danica’s son’s relationship with Camden. It comes from their shared love of hockey and Camden truly wanting to help a child achieve his goals.

As the relationship between Camden and Danica progresses, it’s quite obvious what is going to make them crumble. Again, I appreciate how the author handles this. Danica stands up for herself and her son, even if it hurts. And Camden doesn’t fault her for her choice even though he’s devastated.

I wouldn’t say this is a perfect book, but it worked perfectly for me. There is friendship, steamy connections, character growth, love, and a HEA. It kept me turning the pages and gave me warm-fuzzies, what more could I ask for?
