I’ve read dozens of stories with butch characters and yet it still feels like such an unexpected delight each time I see the word “butch” in a book. The more that younger lesbians and sapphics reject the word, the more I find myself fiercely clinging to it. I love being a butch lesbian. Butchness feels like home. Using the word honors the history and memory of the butch dykes who boldly walked this path before us.

For many (if not most) people, the term 'mother' feels deeply gendered and carries with it the weight of expectations. However, the queer community has long played with the meaning of 'mother,' from the mothers of ballroom culture to queer family-making to the intersection of mothering and trans parenthood. Mother is, after all, an identity like any other and as such it can be stretched, played with, inverted, and examined.
