Fox 8

George Saunders

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

A darkly comic short story, a fable about the all too real impact that we humans have on the environment Fox 8 has always been known as the daydreamer in his pack, the one his fellow foxes regarded with a knowing snort and a roll of the eyes. That is, until Fox 8 develops a unique skill: He teaches himself to speak "Yuman" by hiding in the bushes outside a house and listening to children's bedtime stories. The power of language fuels his abundant curiosity about people—even after "danjer" arrives in the form of a new shopping mall that cuts off his food supply, sending Fox 8 on a harrowing quest to help save his pack.

This book has extremely good message and the bluntness of how it is delivered makes the impact of it a lot stronger. I am constantly being frustrated by people saying animals are invasive creatures when majority of the time it was us humans who have invaded an animals natural habitat and destroyed it and ran them out. Also some humans can be so cruel to animals for no reason and it's heartbreaking, and they way it was portrayed in this is so blunt you can't ignore it nor misinterpret what is being portrayed.

While I understand the message the author was aiming for and I think it's perfectly valid message to be sending out, I do think the delivery hinders it a bit. I understand the idea behind having the Fox writing a letter to Humans, and so the writing isn't going to be perfect but there were a few times where my brain just could not figure out what was being written. For the most part I had no issues reading it as my brain was able to decipher what was being written but I also can't help but think about the people who already struggle with reading never being able to fully enjoy or grasp what was being written in this. It's an interesting dilemma when thinking about accessibility in the book world, and maybe I am overthinking it, and if I am anyone can correct me.
