    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

For many years I have wanted to read this book. There has been so much talk about this beloved fantasy classic. Now I have read it, and I do not get the hype. But, it is going to be a movie, so it feels good to have read the book beforehand.

What did I like about it?
The female protagonist was very weird. She loved math, but was a troublemaker, she had poor eyesight, and was just awkward. I like that. More awkward and not so cool protagonists to the people.
It was an interesting story, featuring time travel, three old ladies, and a world where everyone was exactly the same.

Even if the premise was great, the writing was so hard to follow. It hurt my head to read the book, because the writing was so unappealing. It was not really bad writing, but it was strange. The dialogue was stubby and did not flow at all. The way they solved riddles and problems was not interesting at all. It resembled my writing when I was ten or twelve. Oh, and then they just understood what they should do, or they just talked to the bad guy and everything was solved withing three sentences. Yes, that it good writing. At least make it a little plausible when they solve problems.

This was a christian book. That is also very easy to spot. I love subplots, and they could have made the christianity into such a good subplot. But instead Madeleine L'Engle decided to throw it in the reader's face, which made it less interesting. I would have loved to read between the lines, and see all the signs for angels and the fight between good and bad and how it can be connected to Jesus and more. I do not like it when the author decided to give me everything from point A to Z at the start, and not give any wriggle room.

All in all, it was an okay fantasy book. It was not a waste to read it, but I really wished that the writing would have been smoother.
