The Inheritance

Robin Hobb

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Notwithstanding its author credits, this short story collection was written by one person. "Robin Hobb" and "Megan Lindholm" are both pseudonyms used by California-born Margaret Ogden, who from 1983 to 1992, published exclusively as Lindholm. This generous, 400-page hardcover original brings together short stories and novellas penned under both authorial bylines. As Hobb herself notes, "their" writing and styles differ in significant ways. (P.S. This collection includes stories previously unpublished in the United States.)

Robin Hobb and Megan Lindholm are both pen names for the same person - I’ve read all of Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings series but this was my first foray into Lindholm’s work. This anthology was an odd compilation - it’s unlikely that Hobb & Lindholm’s works would’ve been published in this way had they not been written by the same person. There’s no cohesion between each of their short stories or their writing styles, and their works don’t really belong together in the same book. The short stories written by Hobb were okay, mainly for being set in the same world as the Realm of the Elderlings. Her writing as Lindholm just didn’t grip me in the same way and I don’t know that I’d read more of her works under that pen name.
