Love Lessons

Jacqueline Wilson

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Fourteen-year-old Prue and her sister Grace have been educated at home by their controlling, super-strict father all their lives. Forced to wear Mum's odd hand-made garments and forbidden from reading teenage magazines, they know they're very different to 'normal' girls – but when Dad has a stroke and ends up in hospital, unable to move or speak, Prue suddenly discovers what it's like to have a little freedom. Sent to a real school for the first time, Prue struggles to fit in. The only person she can talk to is her kindly, young – and handsome – art teacher, Rax. They quickly bond, and Prue feels more and more drawn to him. As her feelings grow stronger, she begins to realise that he might feel the same way about her. But nothing could ever happen between them - could it?

    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

This is one of those books that I find myself reading over and over again; I have lost count of how many times I've read it now - it is one of those books that I never tire of. I first read it as a teenager and, as a person who has had a couple of teacher crushes in the past, I found it helped me a lot through those things. It gave me a sense of relief in that I learned that I'm not alone, I'm not abnormal and I'm not strange for liking someone older than me. I also loved how it touched the boundaries of entirely wrong; but I can't help but wish that there was an alternate ending for it! Though I have imagined one myself over and over again.

I have rated this 5*'s because to me it is absolutely perfect. Jacqueline Wilson has always been one of my favorite authors and, to me, she excelled herself in this. I thoroughly enjoyed every page, and will continue to enjoy every page - I don't think I could tire of this. It's a book I gravitate towards when I need a quick, easy and fun re-read!

I absolutely love the writing in this; it's not too complex but things are described so well and thoroughly that I can imagine things and there were so many pictures painted in my head. It was just so well executed. It's fun, quirky and it made me giggle a few times.

I also absolutely loved all of the characters; I found them relatable, likable and I genuinely fell in love with Rax; and I think any reader could, too; he's written THAT well.

The one fault I have with it is the ending. I felt it was unrealistic and I know that in an ordinary situation, a student wouldn't be expelled/sent away for having a crush on a teacher. I just felt it wasn't handled in the right way and that it was really over-exaggerated. But, regardless of that, the book was entirely flawless.

I would recommend this, honestly, to everyone. Particularly the younger teenage/young adult ages! It gives a brilliant message to their readers and is a really fun, quick read - it taught me so much and I feel it could teach others so much, too!
I would recommend you check this out if you haven't already.
