In Vol. 2, things start to ramp up for Dylan as he continues his demon-fuelled vigilante mission to take out the bad guys. After having killed a Russian mobster and not so secretly killing a white collar criminal who had a police detail, Dylan is in serious trouble. With both the cops and the Russian Mafia on his trail, he continues trying to make his secret life not influence his personal life and mostly fails miserably on that count. As his pursuers get closer, Dylan has to figure out how to keep the people he cares about safe while he satisfies his own personal demon.

After an unimpressive first volume in this story, I’ll admit that this one got a bit better for me, but really only towards the end. There’s still a lot of moralizing by Dylan (seriously, this is the first time I’ve ever seen walls of text by Brubaker and it’s not a good thing) but now Brubaker is playing more with the “is he or isn’t he” of whether Dylan is imagining everything or if he’s actually haunted by a demon. As Dylan’s mistakes start mounting up, he becomes less insufferable and more interesting as an unreliable narrator and mostly not great person. And then at the end of this volume, a panel from back in the first volume finally pays off and things get interesting. Leave it to Brubaker to somehow keep me interested at the end even when I was counting pages to see how soon it would be over earlier in the story.

I’ll probably be continuing with the next volume just to see if the payoff is any good. Brubaker has rarely let me down in the past but I haven’t been overly impressed with this series so far. My dislike of Dylan and having to be stuck in his head with all the whining cynicism is making it difficult for me to get into this story.

I feel so sorry for Dylan because he’s in a bad spot. I really like this series a lot. I was surprised that he was in a relationship with Daisy that was revealed in the previous Vol as the future. Also, I get the feeling that something is going to happen to either Daisy or his mom. That demon is not happy. The cop won’t let go and the Russians are after him. I can’t wait to read Volume 3 in January.
