So I started a physical book last night and I think I’m going to love it but I can already tell some of the formatting is going to make things difficult for my dyslexia. And this has got me thinking. We actually have a pretty good idea of what makes it harder or easier to read with dyslexia formatting wise, there’s been a fair amount of research. We want sans serif font with no flourishes to catch on, bolding it helps, so dose line spacing that’s a little larger than normal (within reason) and slightly larger font size. So it’s totally possible to make physical books at least a little more accessible for dyslexia most publishers just don’t. Though to be fair it should be said there’s not really anything that fills that need better than audio books and you can make a lot of these modifications yourself on e books.
But that out of the way this is my petition for more dyslexia accessible physical books because sometimes you just want a physical copy. I especially want new editions of books with dyslexic MCs like Percy Jackson and the tainted cup which I’d argue maybe should have been printed this way in the first place. I recognize there might not be a ton of demand for this but they could do a small release for the same price ad the normal book and also a larger one with all the special addition illustrations and stuff that everyone would buy anyway to bring in all the money.
