some of my predictions below (skip if you don’t want spoilers in case they turn out to carry some truth! pls also refrain from spoiling in comments for future readers ^~^)

• i feel like their mom was taken by the same powers that took ohia. maybe that’s what called ohia to this island in the first place? i’m also curious they don’t talk about their dad in the same vein… they seem very bitter that their mom “left” them but what happened to dad? 🤔

• the resort flyer sounded a bit cultish for sure! ”start your life anew, become a part of kōpaʻa today” - i feel like this last part of the flyer’s marketing is wordplay. since kōpaʻa is sugar/sugarcane, maybe the farm has a way of turning its guests back into the land. it’d be very apt since “that which feeds us” can mean the richness of the soil is used to feed the fruits that we consume, and then in turn it shall turn us back into the soil when we consume it 🍽️

• also the ever popular ʻōlelo noʻeau in the beginning of the book: he aliʻi ka ʻāina, he kauwā ke kanaka. in many ways, the land in hawaiʻi is treated like a sibling, a chief, a part of the community. we take care of the land as it provides for us. the flyer states that their values are “rooted deeply in history, heritage, and preservation” and this may lead us to the unique way this off-grid island seeks to “preserve” its history.

• why do i also think there will be zombies 🤭 like the old inhabitants of the island sometimes wander through the old town area, dead and rotting, waiting for their turn to be consumed by the land

• perhaps the legends of ʻōhiʻa lehua will connect these girls through the spiritual barrier - one being on earth in the mortal realm and the other being below the earth in the spiritual realm, and ohia will have to help her sister get off the island, but lehua will eventually have to leave her sister who is stuck there 😔
