55% (p.163) Becoming A Tree | Meditations

Dropping in w/ the meditation I’ve used from this book since I found them as a kid, and another avaiable right after, in the same section.

The Power of Place. Go to a quiet place in nature. Feel yourself to be a tree. It may be one you have identified with, are already working with, or any one that suits the moment. Feel your roots, your trunk, your branches. Feel the experience of being a tree.

Now Transport yourself to another land. It may be a place you hold sacred. It may be in the Celtic homelands. It may be now, it may be long ago. You may be in a grove, you may stand alone. Put your roots down into the soil of this place. Extend your branches into the air of this place. Feel the power of your trunk, and the elements of the place playing on your body. Now feel the spirits of your place enter the scene. Allow whatever is there to emerge and manifest around you. Feel the energy of the place enter your entire being. Then lift up your roots and return to your quiet place” [To jump in, I just use “return to your body” at the end].

A Tree in all Worlds. Relax in some quiet place. Visualize in your mind’s eye a broad, green, gentle plain, covered by a vast expanse of blue sky. Now see a tree upon the plain: imagine any tree you like. Clearly visualize its properties. When you have a clear image of that tree, imagine another. Slowly visualize as many trees in as much detail as you are comfortable with, making sure that they form a circle around you, with you at the center.

When you have created a good number of trees, and sensed their particular qualities, begin to dissolve those qualities into something more abstract. Sense the quality that makes a tree what it is, the quality that makes it appear again and again in the same form throughout the world. What is the essence of each variety of tree? Does it appear as a form? A color? A sound? Let the quality of each tree dissolve so it is free to blend with the qualities of other trees. Put yourself at the center and feel these qualities join and mesh with you. Be the essence of “treeness.” Reverse the flow. Make the quality of one tree’s essence stronger than the others, then bring up another tree’s essence. You are at the center, orchestrating the world that the trees create. You are the World Tree.

Feel what it is like to be a tree in all worlds. Feel your branches, and your roots. There may be an opening in your trunk through which it is possible to go and visit one place you want to visit in order to ask a question. The World Tree is infinite and reaches into the past and the future.

Now dissolve the World Tree, allowing each tree to go back to its place opon the broad green plain. Give thanks to each tree for the quality it provides. Release the image you have created of the circle of trees. Come back to yourself.”
