I've been thinking lately about adding more local books into my TBR and it got me wondering about what book genres are great for introducing people to local books.
For example, I'm from the Philippines, and I think that Filipino horror and historical fiction are the best genres that we have. The Philippines is rich in superstition and folklore, so there's a lot of Filipino horror books and it really shows the country's culture. This genre, more often than not, also has a lot of connection and symbolism to the horrors that Filipinos face (colonialism, corruption, poverty, discrimination, etc.). The horror in the books isn't just from monsters and magic, but from being given a gritty look into the "dark side" of Filipino society. [EDIT: For anyone who wants to see a list of Filipino Horror & Supernatural novels, I made one and you can find it here!]
Historical fiction is also a great genre because of the Philippines' rich history filled with strife but also hope and will to survive. More often than not, history repeats itself in the Philippines, and it's important to read about our past to understand our current society.
What genre is your country known for or should be known for? If someone wants to read books from your country, what genre do you think is the best as an introduction or encapsulates the culture/history/vibes of your country?
