Because Din literally starts wondering if Ana is an Engraver, and then immediately goes, nope, that doesn’t make sense. Engravers can recall massive amounts of information, but they apparently can’t make the wild intuitive leaps Ana does.
So what exactly is happening in her brain???
There are already SO many little clues that make me suspicious. Ana’s ability to absorb an absurd amount of information, the way she seems to connect details that other people don’t even think are related, how quickly she gets bored when there’s nothing intellectually stimulating her, and now this explicit distinction between remembering information and making intuitive leaps.
Even her whole “I remember and analyze all things interesting” explanation feels suspiciously deliberate. 👀
And I LOVE that we’re experiencing this through Din because even he doesn’t fully understand what she’s doing. He knows exactly what an Engraver is capable of, so when he’s sitting there going “yeah, that doesn’t seem right,” I’m paying attention.
My current theory is basically:
Ana is either augmented in a way we haven’t been told about yet, OR she has some completely different ability that the Empire doesn’t have a neat little category for.
Because there is NO WAY this woman is just raw-dogging detective work with a regular human brain. 💁🏻♀️
