I loved the Cat and Mouse duet, so I went into this book expecting to enjoy it just as much. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work for me.
The biggest issue was the romance. While the relationship shared a lot of similarities with the one in the duet, it felt much more forced here. I never fully believed in the emotional connection between the characters. Instead of feeling like a relationship built on genuine love and understanding, it often came across as primarily driven by physical attraction. Because of that, their intense possessiveness toward one another felt rushed and difficult for me to buy into.
The characters also made it difficult for me to become invested in the story. The FMC was especially frustrating to read from. I struggled to connect with her throughout the book, and by the end, I was honestly relieved to no longer be in her head. The MMC fared slightly better, and he did have a few moments that caught my attention, but overall, he felt fairly underdeveloped and never truly stood out to me.
Despite my disappointment with this particular installment, I’m not ready to give up on the series entirely. I enjoyed the Cat and Mouse duet enough to remain interested in the world, and I’m still curious about the other novellas. Hopefully, some of the later stories will work better for me than this one did.
