I was rather enamoured by this book at the beginning because of its brilliantly witchy vibe in a small town set through Halloween to winter, making it a perfect cosy book. It follows a trio of extraordinary witches that take in the new girl, and their relationships was the best aspect of the book. Each girl had a solid grounding of backstory, except the newcomer Logan, who lacked depth from having less POV chapters. Thalia and Jailah were the characters I believe had most depth, especially in their connection to magic and what it plays in their lives.

It didn’t help that there were POVs from the two mundane boys they find themselves involved in, who also felt very one dimensional, and I wasn’t convinced with their bond with the witches, especially over such a short time and brief meetings. I didn’t believe in Iris and Matthew’s bond at all, and I blanched at their forced banter. Trent was also…there. It felt like his character was being set up to be more important in the next book, but there was so much that could’ve been explored now. It felt like the majority of the plot was working towards something, so it was being unnecessarily vague to add mystery, with no substance. The ending reveals were squashed quite quickly because of the plot dragging, which was a disappointment. Wonderful characters and worldbuilding (if a little confusing at times, there was definitely need of a glossary), but the plot was inadequate.
