reader + translator // fantasy, litfic, recently more horror, sometimes a good old classic (having recovered from the trauma of being an Enlish major). I like when books make me feel like đŸ€Ż

“The first thing they teach me at the store is how to be my best self. It requires constant self-surveillance to steadily improve.”

In two so simple sentences, the author manages to summarize and neatly articulate so many thoughts I’ve had for a long time about how all the self-care time, routines, products, rituals even that are promoted to women as a treat and forms of liberation, sometimes emancipation, are - besides being a marketing trick - just new ways of oppression of the woman and her body/form.

I'm really enjoying the multiple-pov! Especially spending some time in Natasia's head, after her being a mysterious character that's only been spoken about a few times, is exciting. Since I'm translating this book, I'm focusing quite a lot on the style, and I have to say that Deonn's writing has definitely improved, imo. It's less wordy, a bit less tell and a bit more show, less repetitive and redundant, and her pacing is better too, I feel. Of course that that's aided by the non-linear storytelling thanks to the multiple narrators. So far, I'm enjoying it both as a reader and a translator!

my only hope for Glorian by the end of the book is that the poor girl catches a break

otherwise, i love this more than Priory. I feel much more immersed in the story and familiar with the charcters, and also there are more characters and their dynamics that I care about than in Priory. But tbh, it could be partly because I already know the world and lore of this book so it's easier to follow the story. Anywho, this book is confirming that I will be reading anything Samantha Shannon writes, ever
