I know it is an epic poem about a war, but still, pretty graphic, and I'm just a quarter of the way in.

Like most classics I would imagine, sometimes the best way to adjust your mind to a story's setting & language is just to keep reading. An ancient work such as the Iliad demands it, I think. I'm starting to straighten a little when Homer describes Paris donning armor, or Pandaros preparing an arrow for flight. Glory and honor for sure, if it wasn't for the fickle, petty & meddling gods prolonging the conflict.

There are lots of translations of the Iliad, but I'm glad I'm reading a newer translation that has the benefit of hindsight of previous translations. Very readable. What have I learned from Book 1? Gods are just as bad as humans if not worse, and Achilles and Agamemnon have some issues to work out! Wondering how the gods will influence the arc of this epic.
