Like most classics I would imagine, sometimes the best way to adjust your mind to a story's setting & language is just to keep reading. An ancient work such as the Iliad demands it, I think. I'm starting to straighten a little when Homer describes Paris donning armor, or Pandaros preparing an arrow for flight. Glory and honor for sure, if it wasn't for the fickle, petty & meddling gods prolonging the conflict.

There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and he becomes determined not only to escape, but also to unearth the treasure and use it to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration. Dumas’ epic tale of suffering and retribution, inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment, was a huge popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s. Robin Buss’s lively English translation is complete and unabridged, and remains faithful to the style of Dumas’s original. There are lots of translations of the Iliad, but I'm glad I'm reading a newer translation that has the benefit of hindsight of previous translations. Very readable. What have I learned from Book 1? Gods are just as bad as humans if not worse, and Achilles and Agamemnon have some issues to work out! Wondering how the gods will influence the arc of this epic.

I made a vid about this a while ago but i wanna see what you guys say. Do any of you have books that you consider your white whale? Like a book you have been hunting for in the wild? A specific edition of something that would make all your searching worth it?

For me it’s

a US copy of Solaris by Stanislaw Lem that doesn’t have the ugly movie release cover
Demon Theory by Stephen Graham Jones. A book i haven’t found available online for less than $100
the specific edition of Graham Greene’s The Destructors they read from in Donnie Darko (not even sure if this edition exists out in the real world but i need a copy of it before i die)
the wet hot American summer comic books

Last time i did this someone found a 1st edition copy of Jaws for me so maybe this will help others
