Poor Folk

Poor Folk (Russian: Бедные люди, Bednye lyudi), sometimes translated as Poor People,[note] is the first novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky, written over the span of nine months between 1844 and 1845. Dostoevsky was in financial difficulty because of his extravagant lifestyle and his developing gambling addiction; although he had produced some translations of foreign novels, they had little success, and he decided to write a novel of his own to try to raise funds.
Inspired by the works of Gogol, Pushkin, and Karamzin, as well as English and French authors, Poor Folk is written in the form of letters between the two main characters, Makar Devushkin and Varvara Dobroselova, who are poor third cousins twice removed. The novel showcases the life of poor people, their relationship with rich people, and poverty in general, all common themes of literary naturalism. A deep but odd friendship develops between them until Dobroselova loses her interest in literature, and later in communicating with Devushkin after a rich widower Mr. Bykov proposes to her. Devushkin, a prototype of the clerk found in many works of naturalistic literature at that time, retains his sentimental characteristics; Dobroselova abandons art, while Devushkin cannot live without literature.
Contemporary critics lauded Poor Folk for its humanitarian themes. While Vissarion Belinsky dubbed the novel Russia's first "social novel" and Alexander Herzen called it a major socialist work, other critics detected parody and satire. The novel uses a complicated polyphony of voices from different perspectives and narrators. Initially offered by Dostoyevsky to the liberal-leaning magazine Fatherland Notes, the novel was published in the almanac, St. Petersburg Collection, on January 15, 1846. It became a huge success nationwide. Parts of it were translated into German by Wilhelm Wolfsohn and published in an 1846/1847 magazine. The first English translation was provided by Lena Milman in 1894, with an introduction by George Moore, cover art design by Aubrey Beardsley, and publication by London's Mathews and Lane.
The Idiot

Returning to Russia from a sanitarium in Switzerland, the Christ-like epileptic Prince Myshkin finds himself enmeshed in a tangle of love, torn between two women—the notorious kept woman Nastasya and the pure Aglaia—both involved, in turn, with the corrupt, money-hungry Ganya. In the end, Myshkin’s honesty, goodness, and integrity are shown to be unequal to the moral emptiness of those around him. In her revision of the Garnett translation, Anna Brailovsky has corrected inaccuracies wrought by Garnett’s drastic anglicization of the novel, restoring as much as possible the syntactical structure of the original story.

The Landlady

The Landlady is a novella by Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky, written in 1847. Set in Saint Petersburg, it tells of an abstracted young man, Vasily Mikhailovich Ordynov, and his obsessive love for Katerina, the wife of a dismal husband whom Ordynkov perceives as a malignant fortune-teller or mystic. The story has echoes of Russian folklore and may contain autobiographical references. In its time The Landlady had a mixed reception, more recently being seen as perhaps unique in Dostoyevsky's oeuvre. The first part of the novella was published in October 1847 in Notes of the Fatherland, the second part in November that year.

Il funzionario Ivan Matveič, uomo supponente e ignorante, e la sua bella moglie Elena Ivanovna vanno ad ammirare l’esotica attrazione con un amico di famiglia. Ma quando Ivan Matveič cerca di solleticargli il naso con un guanto, il coccodrillo lo inghiotte in un solo boccone. Sventrare l’animale sembrerebbe l’unica soluzione – «retrograda», però, osserva un progressista di passaggio. E lo stesso Ivan Matveič, dal ventre del suo leviatano – grande, comodo, solo un po’ troppo odoroso di gomma –, fa sapere che vuole restarsene lì dentro. Lontano dagli svaghi mondani, sostiene, potrà dedicarsi come un «nuovo Fourier» a migliorare le sorti del genere umano, e «dal coccodrillo ... verranno la verità e la luce». El escritor ruso Fiodor (o Fédor) Dostoievski (1821-1881), es uno de los mayores novelistas de la historia y aportó gran cantidad de bases para las novelas modernas. En sus novelas, explora el alma humana, en un complejo contexto espiritual, social y político de la sociedad rusa del siglo XIX. Fiódor Dostoyevski sufrió persecución por su política contraria al zarismo de la época. Después de haber sido condenado a muerte por sus actividades revolucionarias, pasó nueve años de prisión. Fue deportado a Siberia, condenado a trabajos forzados en Omsk. Más tarde escapó al extranjero huyendo de sus acreedores (1867) y no volvió a su país hasta 1871. Las penalidades que sufrió en su vida ha influido patentemente en la gran profundidad psicológica e intenso patetismo en sus novelas. Pubblicato a puntate nel 1861 sulla rivista Vremja, è il primo grande romanzo di Dostoevskij dopo il ritorno dalla deportazione in Siberia. Umiliati e offesi è costruito secondo i moduli del romanzo d'appendice in cui colpi di scena, intreccio, estrema inquietudine dei personaggi, tempi narrativi ora bruschi, ora trattenuti, danno vita a una narrazione d'effetto, spesso avvolta nel mistero. L'autore schiera i suoi personaggi su due fronti, secondo una contrapposizione netta tra vizi e virtù, luce e tenebre. Tuttavia, di là dall'epopea avventurosa, la sua capacità di soffrire insieme con i singoli personaggi, l'intensità dei sentimenti che egli infonde, conferiscono una tensione continua a questo romanzo di relazioni impossibili e d'amore.

Un Dostoevskij lirico, ispirato, comincia a riflettere sulle disillusioni dell’esistenza e dell’amore nell’ultima opera pubblicata prima dell’arresto e della deportazione, esperienze che modificheranno in maniera radicale e definitiva la sua concezione dell’uomo e dell’arte. Il giocatore è un romanzo di Fedor Dostoevskij, dettato in un mese a Anna Grigorievna Snitkina (che diventerà in seguito la sua fidanzata) e pubblicato nel 1866. Scritto per necessità (lo scrittore doveva pagare dei debiti di gioco), pressato dagli editori ai quali aveva promesso questo romanzo, contemporaneo di Delitto e castigo, Il giocatore è comunque diventato un capolavoro e un punto di riferimento della narrativa russa dell'Ottocento. Dostoevskij analizza il gioco d'azzardo in tutte le sue forme con i diversi tipi di giocatori, dai ricchi nobili europei, ai poveretti che si giocano tutti i loro averi, ai ladri tipici dei casinò. È anche uno studio delle diverse peculiarità delle popolazioni europee: la severità del barone tedesco, la vanità del conte italiano, il ricco gentleman inglese e il francese manipolatore.

Iakov Petrovici Goliadkin este unul dintre acei funcționari obscuri care populează literatura rusă, de la Gogol și până la Bulgakov. Un om șters, ușor stângaci, ușor penibil, cu un discurs ezitant și confuz. Are, însă, locul lui stabil în societate și în instituția la care este angajat. Totul, până într-o zi în care apare copia lui, cu același nume și cu înfățișare identică. Din acest moment, propria viață îi scapă de sub control adevăratului Goliadkin. Pe măsură ce acțiunea evoluează, frustrarea pe care o simțim din solidaritate cu personajul principal este dublată de multitudinea de ipoteze sugerate de răsturnările de situație. Chiar dacă Goliadkin nu este un individ întru totul agreabil, Dostoievski are putearea de a ne deschide inimile pentru cei care, dincolo de aparente și conveniențe, sunt onești și au principii morale ferme.
Scris la vârsta de douăzeci și cinci de ani, imediat după debutul cu "Oameni sărmani", "Dublul" este, în mod evident, o continuare a liniei deschise de Gogol, în care realismul poartă accente întunecare de suprarealism.

Crimen y castigo (1866), considerada por la crítica como la primera obra maestra de Dostoievski, es un profundo análisis psicológico de su protagonista, el joven estudiante Raskolnikov, cuya firme creencia en que los fines humanitarios justifican la maldad le conduce al asesinato de un usurero petersburgués. Pero, desde que comete el crimen, la culpabilidad será una pesadilla constante con la que el estudiante será incapaz de convivir. El estilo enfebrecido y compasivo de Dostoievski sigue con maestría única los recovecos de las contradictorias emociones del estudiante y refleja la lucha extrema que libra con su conciencia mientras deambula por las calles de San Petersburgo. Ya en prisión, Raskolnikov se da cuenta de que la felicidad no puede ser alcanzada siguiendo un plan establecido a priori por la razón: ha de ganarse con sufrimiento.

Il tema del «sognatore romantico», dell'eroe solitario che – come l'«anima bella» schilleriana che vive nel regno dell'ideale e dell'utopia estetica più astratta – trascorre i suoi giorni immerso nella dimensione del sogno, in un paradiso di illusioni, malinconicamente sofferente e lontano dall'incolore e consueta realtà dell'esistenza quotidiana, percorre come un filo di Arianna questo racconto. In una notte bianca, crudelmente reale, passeggiando solitario l'eroe del racconto incontra sul lungofiume una ragazza che risveglia in lui il sentimento dell'amore – il simbolo della temuta vita reale –, e coraggiosamente egli decide di fuggire dal regno dei sogni e delle fantasticherie in cui trascorre i suoi giorni, aprendosi alla vita. Ma quando la ragazza gli rivela di amare un altro, la sua speranza svanisce, annullata dalla crudele vendetta del destino, ricacciata nella dimensione del sogno, a un tempo capace di dare felicità e sofferenza. Un regno delle illusioni che è anche metaforicamente simbolo del male.

«Imaginen un marido cuya mujer, una suicida que se ha arrojado por la ventana hace sólo unas horas, yace ante él sobre una mesa. Él está conmocionado y no ha tenido tiempo de ordenar sus ideas. Camina de habitación en habitación e intenta dar un sentido a lo que acaba de ocurrir. [...] De ahí que se cuente a sí mismo la historia, intente aclarársela». Así explica Dostoievski su obra en la «Nota del autor» que precede La dulce, a la que llama relato fantástico.
La dulce se basa probablemente en hechos verídicos en que el autor ruso se inspiró para escribir una de sus más inquietantes novelas cortas. Como si de un viaje al pasado se tratara, Dostoievski, a través de las contradicciones, remordimientos y justificaciones en el soliloquio del protagonista «ante un auditorio invisible o una especie de juez», investiga en los recuerdos a la búsqueda de lo que se encuentra en el alma humana.

Fiódor Dostoievski fue acusado y condenado a causa de ciertas relaciones que tuvo con grupos revolucionarios. Tal actividad le envió al penal siberiano de Omsk, donde estuvo entre los años 1850 y 1854. En ese duro periodo gestó Apuntes de la Casa Muerta, que se publicó entre 1861 y 1862. En ella se aprecian ya no sólo el conocimiento y la observación prodigiosos de la naturaleza y el comportamiento humano, que se agudizó durante los años de su condena, sino también la importancia que cobra en sus páginas la preocupación por la dimensión moral y espiritual del hombre, que alcanzará sus máximos exponentes en obras posteriores como Crimen y castigo, Los hermanos Karamázov o El idiota.
