    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

It’s hard to summarize my feelings about a novel and series with such a grand scope. At times I felt overwhelmed by the intermingling storylines and half-information that Erikson gives, but then 10 pages later am in awe of the way that something I didn’t initially understand comes to impact a characters story down the line. Compared to Gardens of the Moon, Deadhouse Gates is easier to follow, but is much more bleak. These characters really go through it dang. Erikson is also so talented in the way he gets you to instantly care for or hate a character within a page of meeting them. While Malazan is praised for its intricate plot, I really do think the character work is what keeps me invested. Only complaint about this book is that the last two chapters felt a bit underwhelming compared to rollercoaster of the rest of Book 4, but I’m excited to keep reading. I’m hoping they get less challenging with each book hopefully?
