Recs if you like Trail of Lightning...

Literature featuring indigenous authors from the Americas and Pacific. Fiction from across all genres by First Nations of Canada and the US, Māori, Aboriginal Australian, Samoan, Hawaiian, Papua New Guinean and other Pacific Island indigenous peoples. Any and all recommendations are more than welcome! Thank you 💜

Much of the post/apoc genre is taken up by US-centric fiction, giving a very specific mindset & often a similar type of apocalypse. There's a strong focus on guns & military. Settings outside the US can provide us with unusual, diverse & interesting stories of survival

Sister list to: Zombie Apocs - But Not US-centric

Fictional settings allowed. Some books may cross borders, inc sections in the US. Allowance made for US indigenous authors

First of a series only

Suggestions welcome!

In honour of the 2026 nominations, this list compiles all the nominees for the Hugo Award for Best Novel from 2010 - 2026.

If you ask someone what apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic fiction they've read, there's a fair chance much of that list will have been written by cis men, because they're the books that get the most promotion in the genre.

My hope is that this list will help someone find a new favourite apocalypse author! ♡

Sister list to: Zombie Apocs - No Cis-Male Authors Allowed

First of a series only

Suggestions so welcome, particularly for trans, enby, & other authors of marginalised genders

Love casts a spell; the real monster is oppression. Modern magical realism, urban fantasy, and fabulism: books that use supernatural elements to explore themes of family, desire, history, and society.

Westerns with a fantastical spin to them- whether it be monsters, magic or supernatural elements. If you have any suggestions, leave them in the comments!

Fiction that imagines US or post-US futures within the next ~100 years with major societal changes and themes including war, revolution, decolonization, climate change, balkanization, collapse, etc. Suggestions welcome

Finally watched Sinners (2025) written and directed by Ryan Coogler Starting list from thebookclub.eu on ig and ft. domdeereads ♡

Based on the HRCYED 3.0 prompt! Books with weather or natural disasters/phenomena on the cover (at least one version), including: rain, storms, lightning, clouds, snowfall, fog, sunshine, tornados, earthquakes, wildfires, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis.

Not an exhaustive list - feel free to suggest titles! I tried to keep it more focused on books that fit the prompt but would be harder to find (i.e. ones that don't have the key words in the title).

I like my wizards in leather, my shifters in the streets(and sheets), and my skylines full of magic.

Fiction that deals with climate change. Books may take place in the world as we know it, in the near future, or in fictional worlds experiencing climate change.

A blend of traditional frontier tales with horror, fantasy, and/or science fiction elements

It took me FOREVER to put my lists together, so I wanted to share them in case anyone else needed book ideas for HRCYED 3.0 (Hardest Reading Challenge You’ll Ever Do)!

A note about The Girl in the Tower: I have the UK editions of this series and they include snow!

A note about When Stars Rain Down: I originally thought of the little white spots as rain but am now questioning that. TBD on if I change this book to something else!

when what you really need is a woman covered in blood

Fantasy and horror with heroes who slay monsters

Speculative fiction exploring identity, personal power, and the stories we tell, where characters shape themselves as much as their worlds.

Incredible fantasy, horror, and mythobiography by Native authors

A list of books selected for the Sword and Laser Podcast

Every daggone book out there is "special" these days 🙄 but I need these, publishing houses! NEED!

(note - for series I've only included the first book)
