If you enjoy fated mates, forbidden love, and slow-burn romance, with dragon riders, found family and quirky sidekicks, you’ll adore this page-turning tale of lovers learning sometimes it’s futile to fight fate.Sacred Struggle has an HFN ending with a mild cliffhanger, and will appeal to readers of Fourth Wing (Rebecca Yarros), Crescent City (Sarah J. Maas) and When the Moon Hatched (Sarah A. Parker). Sacred Struggle includes open-door spice and explicit language, with torture of people and dragons, as well as sexual assault and depravity (but not between the main characters).

I received an ARC copy of this, and I meant to take my time reading it but I ended up pretty much finishing it in one sitting. Starting with the plot, it was pretty fast paced. It’s a huge part of why it held my interest because there was always something happening. I wasn’t completely a fan of where it all ended, but I’m curious and interested enough that I’ll definitely read the next book when it comes out. I’m a sucker for dragons, so they were absolutely my favourite characters and I wish we’d had a bit more of them. Sifa and Fhord were an interesting relationship to explore. Their chemistry was something I really enjoyed and I loved watching the development and I was happy with where things left off with them. An interesting concept, and a fun and quick read. I look forward to the sequel. If I could do more specific decimals, I’d call this one 3.75 stars.

This darker fantasy romance perfectly balances mystery, dragon and elf lore, action, and romance. I started it at 7:30 am and finished it at 12:45 pm on the same day, I absolutely devoured it. Both the main characters are grumpy, competent, and relatable. Tropes in the book: slow burn, fated mates, he falls first, forced proximity, and possibly enemies to lovers (debatable on a technicality I can't reveal without spoilers). The spice is open-door but relatively mild. The world is bleak, and I wish we could have had a little more lore/history in this book, but I can tell there's much more to learn from whatever sequels we get next!
